Are Your Gutters Pitched Properly?

guttersInstalling a gutter system might seem like an easy task, but there are a lot of things that can go wrong and have a negative impact on the performance of the system. One such problem is incorrect gutter pitch. If the gutters do not function as they should, then extensive property damage can result, including landscape erosion as well as damage to the roof and foundation. Pitch problems, unfortunately, are not always easily detected with the naked eye.

What is Gutter Pitch?

Gutter pitch is the angle by which the gutters slant downward along the water flow path. If this angle is too sharp, the problem will be apparent, as the gutters will look awkward along the side of the roof. If the angle is not sloped enough, then water will pool up even in clean gutters, leaving the water to simply spill over the side.  The ideal slope is a quarter inch for every ten feet, and the slope must be angled toward the closest downspout. When the slope is improper, gutter repair is the only option.

The Importance of Pitch

Many people assume that the main concern with gutters is keeping them unclogged, but improper gutter pitch can undermine the entire purpose of having a system, because the system will not function as intended. This lack of functioning leaves the property vulnerable to extensive damage. The more rain and harsh weather conditions in the area in which the building is located, the more extensive the damage will be, and the faster that damage will occur. Proper pitch helps protect both the property and the finances of the property owner.

How to Identify a Problem with Gutter Slope
Although problems with pitch are not always so easily identified, there are warning signs and ways to make sure that no such problem exists. As gutter experts we can provide gutter inspections that can help to identify any issues with the angle, even before the disastrous problems that may result from an improper slope are able to manifest.
