Aluminum Gutters Vs. Copper Gutters

Plumbing consisting of copper gutter and drain.Selecting a gutter system material is largely a question of consumer priority and preference. Both aluminum and copper gutter systems are reliable and popular, but for differing reasons. Things to consider before selecting a gutter system include cost, long-term durability, aesthetics, or any combination of those qualities.

Aluminum gutters are less costly than their copper counterparts. This is an important consideration for larger homes that will require more linear feet of material. Aluminum is generally easier to install, requiring comparably fewer tools and parts. Although it’s important to note that due to its softer composition, aluminum is more susceptible to dents and corrosion than copper. However, there is no reason that consumers should be deterred from using aluminum. Only 20% of gutters in the United States are composed of a material besides aluminum, which speaks to the overall integrity of the material. Aluminum can easily be painted to coordinate with the outside of your home. In addition to the ease of aluminum gutter installation, the pliability of the material makes it easy to fit sections of home exterior that may require custom and flexible fitting.

While copper gutters carry a heftier price tag, there is less maintenance involved in long-term care. Copper gutters are a feature that may enhance your home’s marketability, but they may also make your home a mark for marauders in search of precious metals for resale. They are highly rust-resistant, but may require special processing for cleaning and treatment. Additionally, the attachments and fitments for copper gutters should be made of the same composition or material of similar strength. Intermixing copper gutters with aluminum fasteners and attachments could degrade the material.
If aesthetics are of primary importance, choosing between aluminum and copper depends on the look of the rest of the house. Both materials are long-lasting, but between the two, copper wins the industrial-strength award. If you’re unsure of which material to choose, give us a call.
